Abha and Asir Region โ A Different Manpower Market
Abha is the capital of Asir Province, situated in the Asir Mountains at 2,200 metres elevation. The climate is cooler and wetter than the rest of Saudi Arabia โ Abha experiences summer fog and rain that is virtually unknown in Riyadh or Jeddah. This affects worker acclimatisation, project timelines and the attractiveness of the posting to some nationalities.
Tourism is Abha's fastest-growing sector. Saudi Vision 2030 has positioned Asir as a domestic tourism destination, with investment in cable cars, eco-resorts, mountain chalets and the Asir National Park development. Hotel construction and hospitality staffing in Abha have grown faster in the 2020s than almost any other Saudi city outside Riyadh and Jeddah. F&B workers, housekeeping staff, tourism guides (for Saudi nationals only) and resort maintenance workers are among the most active sourcing requests in this region.
Construction in Abha involves considerations that don't apply elsewhere. Mountain terrain limits vehicle access for some sites. Weather delays are more common than in the lowland cities. The local Saudi population has a distinct cultural character โ tribal, conservative and mountain-community oriented โ and workers who perform well in Riyadh's urban environment may or may not adapt comfortably to a rural Asir posting. These are practical considerations worth discussing with your manpower provider before committing to a deployment in this region.
